Suppressing rebellion

Xerxes I inherited the Persian throne and faced severe administrative challenges across his empire, including a major revolt in Egypt around 484–483 BCE. He brutally suppressed the uprising, revoked special political privileges previously granted to the country, and imposed harsher governance and heavier taxation under the control of a Persian satrap. His reign marked a shift toward a much tighter and less conciliatory imperial grip on Egypt.
