A confusing chronology

The 13th Dynasty began without violence following the reign of Sobekneferu, the final ruler of the 12th Dynasty. The period is incredibly confusing for historians. Estimates suggest between 50 and 70 kings ruled over a span of 150 years, indicating severe political instability at the top.

An elected kingship

One prominent theory suggests the 13th Dynasty was not a traditional royal bloodline. It may have consisted of rotating or elected rulers chosen from powerful regional families. This system would explain why so many kings had exceptionally short reigns, as the chosen leaders would have already been quite old upon taking the throne. The state survived its first few decades intact primarily because capable viziers and civil servants managed the kingdom from the capital at Itjtawy.
